Simply Penang, One Utama

*Updates: Simply Penang has been relocated to the new wing, lower ground floor and renamed Simply Chicken. You can visit their other branch at Sunway Pyramid. Click here for the address.

*First post of 2011! Happy New Year to you! May 2011 brings you luck in whichever you do, plentiful of prosperity and stay healthy always.

This is one of our favourite haunt whenever we’re in One Utama. The first reason is because CK’s working nearby and his company has staff discount when he dine at here. Second, friendly service and ambiance is more quiet and relaxing, good for catching up with friends.

They claimed to be using ingredients imported from Penang to ensure that their food taste as authentic as the original Penang counterparts. In case you’re wondering, this place is halal and they were featured on TV3’s Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan in Oct 2006.

I would never fail to order their Ais Kacang Special (RM5.50) whenever I come here. Although they do not have the brown sugar syrup, I like the fact that they served it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, plenty of condiments like the red beans, grass jelly and crushed peanuts on top. The prawn noodle however, wasn’t spicy at all and the soup tastes sweet instead. I thought authentic Penang prawn noodle was supposed to be spicy? CK loves it though, most probably because his stomach couldn’t take spicy stuff.

If you don’t feel like having nasi lemak, you can choose for nasi nyonya instead. They have different combos of side dishes for you to choose from, ranging from assam prawn, deep fried turmeric ikan kembung, chicken lorbak (marinated diced chicken, then roll in thin soybean sheets and then deep fried), chicken wing, chicken rendang and so on. I would usually opt for the chicken lorbak combo, which comes with ju hu char (stir-fried jicama with cuttlefish), dried shrimp sambal, rendang gravy and sambal belacan. I like the lorbak for its freshly cooked and redolent with five spice taste. The dried shrimp sambal was one of the better ones I’ve tasted so far (mom’s version still the best!). Don’t forget to drench your rice with the rendang gravy!
