DU Project: Kenny Uptown

This new eatery, with its big, red fish motif signboard was seen for the first time about 6 months ago along the LDP Highway. Unfortunately, its location was probably one of the biggest weakness as it is located near to DU’s police station, quite a distance from all the bustling office towers.

However, that doesn’t stop us from checking what they have to offer. Initial check with the waitress reveals that their specialty is freshwater fish and seafood (see the aquariums at the back of the shop?) and they were quite persistent in asking us to try their catch. However, we dismissed their suggestion as it would be too rush for us (unless we have 2 hours of lunch break!)

Other than just fish, they have individual meals and set lunch as well (phew). Set lunch comes with a glass of herbal tea or juice. The rice dishes (Black Pepper Beef Rice – RM8 and Ginger Beef Rice – RM8); taste wise were kinda normal, nothing to shout about, portion-wise, they were a bit small, even for ladies. Do not let the picture delude you, as you are actually seeing more vegetables rather than meat.

Noodles wise, the Seafood Noodle (RM8) looked kinda sad with wantan noodle served with a few pieces of squids and fish fillets and definitely doesn’t worth the price tag. My Spicy Minced Chicken Noodle (RM8) was rather delectable; wantan noodle doused with a thick dollop of sauce prepared with minced chicken, chilli, ginger, garlic, taucu (fermented bean paste) and spring onion. The sauce actually taste like the bean paste you would normally order to go with steam fish (the Chinese called it “cheong ching”). Quite an innovation.

And the best dish for that day would be the Salted Egg Yolk Squid (RM15). The batter was light, airy and crumbly – instantly melt-in-the-mouth sensation! Very good stuff. Perhaps they are really what they are – specialize in seafood and not individual dishes.
